Mountaineer's Cemetery

Very warm feeling here despite it being a cemetery. It was cool to look around and just be at peace with those who are gone. Beautiful view of the matterhorn and many headstones for those who died doing what they love.

Im Jahr 2003 wurden die Gräber der verunglückten Alpinisten auf das Areal zwischen der römisch-katholischen Pfarrkirche St. Mauritius und Triftbach umgelagert. Hier ruhen die verunglückte Alpinist*innen rund um Zermatt. Die Inschriften zeigen: Es starben Frauen und Männer aus aller Welt am Matterhorn, am Täschhorn, Weisshorn, Liskamm, im Monte-Rosa-Gebiet oder auch am Obergabelhorn. Rund 50 Grabsteine und ihre Inschriften kann man entdecken. - Berührend. Die meisten stammen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, einige auch aus den Anfängen des 20. Jahrhunderts

Pioneers of alpinism are laid to rest here. Among these some members of the first successful climb to the summit of the Matterhorn, four out of seven died during the decent.

There is a public park near by, it's a historical place for over 500 mountaineers memorial :) and they slept forever in peace

A very sobering and even sad place to remember those who Chose to Climb the Matterhorn and lost their young lives. Many were in their teens and early twenties when they met their end, before their lives had truly begun. The graves of the original group that was led by Edward Whymper are here as well. They summited successfully in 1865 but met disaster on the way down.The cemetery is located behind St. Mauritius Catholic Church and is open 24/7. It is well maintained and a very interesting place to visit.

A local cemetery, with a corner dedicated to mountaineers who lost their lives climbing the Matterhorn, the mountain which overlooks the town of Zermatt. Take a quiet walk here to commemorate their lives. Well-maintained and much-visited by the community.

Le cimetière du village de Zermatt. C’est un petit cimetière célèbre car il y a plusieurs alpinistes de la première heure enterrés dans cette terre. Il y a aussi plusieurs tombes d’alpinistes célèbres situées autour de l’église Saint-Maurice. Des alpinistes qui sont arrivés de Londres à la fin de dix-neuvièmes siècles. L’avènement du train. L’arrivée du train et l’arrivée des alpinistes anglais. Ils ont payé des guides locaux et on gravit pour, officiellement, la première fois tous ces pics alpins. Ils ont gravé leurs noms sur le libellé, première ascension. Mais certain ont payé le prix fort. Ils résident maintenant à jamais sur ce bout de terrain remplit de touristes.

Nearby the bridge there is a scenic place to take photo and have a glace of Matterhorn peak during sunrise.
